In the winter of 2025-2026, Van Berkel made many ritualistic bike rides through Utrecht, where the collecting of gloves was the main purpose. By setting this as a goal, it became more approachable for the artist to step outside in the dark and cold days of winter. The gloves have been structurally categorized, archived and equipped with the coördinates of the original location where they were found.
The exhibition space was not the final destination of these gloves. Van Berkel invited visitor to choose a glove and take it with them. The receiver could choose for themselves; return the glove to it’s place (and thus stepping outside themselves), or keeping it a while longer to give them comfort.
With this installation, the artist wants to create a space for people to wonder about and feel connected to the people behind the lost gloves, and to make the darkness of winter feel a little softer.
